Maternal Child Health & Advanced Obstetrics Fellowship

Overview

The Southern New Mexico Family Medicine Maternal Child Health & Advanced Obstetrics Fellowship is a one-year post-residency fellowship designed for family physicians seeking advanced training in surgical obstetrics, maternal-child health, rural maternity care, and academic family medicine.

This fellowship prepares graduates to become leaders in comprehensive women's healthcare while maintaining full-spectrum Family Medicine practice. Fellows function as junior faculty members within the residency program and develop expertise in resident education, inpatient medicine, pediatric care, and advanced obstetrical procedures.

Program Goals

Upon completion of the fellowship, graduates will be able to:

• Provide comprehensive prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, neonatal, pediatric, and adult care.
• Independently perform cesarean deliveries and advanced obstetrical procedures.
• Competently manage high-risk pregnancies in collaboration with Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Obstetrics specialists.
• Perform operative vaginal deliveries and manage obstetrical emergencies.
• Serve as Family Medicine faculty members with proficiency in teaching, supervision, and scholarly activity.
• Deliver evidence-based maternity care in rural and underserved communities (OB deserts).
• Maintain broad-spectrum Family Medicine skills across outpatient, inpatient, pediatric, and obstetrical settings.

Applicant Qualifications

• Graduate from an ACGME-accredited Family Medicine Residency Program.
• Hold or be eligible for an unrestricted medical license.
• Be ABFM certified or board eligible.

• Participation in at least 80 vaginal deliveries during residency training (preferred)
• Commitment to serving rural or underserved communities.

Fellowship Curriculum/Core Training Components

The fellowship provides a longitudinal one-year experience integrating advanced obstetrics, maternal-child health, faculty development, and comprehensive Family Medicine practice.

Advanced Obstetrics

Gain extensive hands-on experience managing uncomplicated and high-risk pregnancies, including labor and delivery, operative vaginal birth, cesarean delivery, obstetric ultrasound, obstetric emergencies, and consultation for complex maternal-fetal conditions.

Women's Health Procedures

Develop competency in office-based gynecologic and reproductive health procedures, including IUD and Nexplanon insertion/removal, endometrial biopsy, and other outpatient women's health services.

Maternal-Child Health

Provide continuous care across the maternal-child spectrum, from preconception counseling and prenatal care through delivery, postpartum care, newborn medicine, and pediatric care.

Newborn & Pediatric Care

Train in newborn nursery management, neonatal resuscitation, breastfeeding medicine, circumcision, and both inpatient and outpatient pediatric care.

Academic Medicine & Teaching

Prepare for leadership roles in academic Family Medicine through resident supervision, clinical teaching, procedural instruction, scholarly activity, quality improvement, and educational program development.

Comprehensive Family Medicine

Maintain broad-spectrum Family Medicine skills through continuity clinic, adult and pediatric inpatient medicine, preventive care, chronic disease management, women's health, and interdisciplinary team-based care.
